Here’s a little nugget of information to keep in mind for the next time you head out to play trivia: The Ford Mustang once again reigns supreme as the world’s best-selling sports coupe in 2018. Ford took the opportunity of the Mustang’s 55th anniversary on National Mustang Day to announce that its prized pony topped global sales for the segment it founded for a fourth year in a row.
“We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair, and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”
Ford sold 113,066 Mustang cars around the world in 2018, including 75,842 in the United States. The success of the Mustang was driven in no small part by the new Ford Mustang BULLITT, which beat its global sales expectations by a whopping 25 percent — thanks in large part to its 480-horsepower performance.
You can expect the Mustang to repeat this title for a fifth year in 2019. Ford’s already revealed its 700-plus-horsepower 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 and announced a 2.3L High Performance Package for the Mustang EcoBoost® that makes it the most powerful four-cylinder sports car out there.
