Ford’s Mustang muscle car has established a rich history of racing and performance. In fact, this year marks 50 years since the original Mustang Cobra Jet dominated at the 1968 NHRA Winternationals. To commemorate the occasion, Ford has announced the release of 68 units of a 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet.
This special edition Mustang Cobra Jet is the fastest and most powerful version ever created. The potent pony car can sprint the quarter mile in just over 8 seconds and can reach a top speed of 150mph. A supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8 powers this non-VIN production model, which features a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering and a four-link rear suspension.
Other race add-ons for the 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet include a drag race-specific coil-over suspension that features Weld Racing design wheels, complete with badging commemorating the anniversary; Racetech FIA seats; and, an NHRA-certified roll cage.
“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” commented Eric Cin, who is the global director for Ford Performance Parts. “That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”
The special edition Mustang Cobra Jet can be ordered in Oxford White or Race Red and features unique 50th anniversary graphics and badging.
While most of us won’t get the opportunity to own this special version of the Mustang, you can find the standard production version of the pony car at Olathe Ford.
